Cpl. David Ralph Slaton, 56, was northbound on U.S. Highway 81 about 10:45 p.m.
when he struck a cow that had wandered onto the road east of Wichita Falls along the
Oklahoma border.
The impact pushed his vehicle into the northbound lanes, where he hit a southbound semi, said Tela Mange, a spokeswoman for the Texas Department of Public Safety.
Slaton died at the scene. The truck driver, 37-year-old Brett Douglas Noga of Oklahoma, was not injured.
Slaton joined DPS in 1974 and was stationed in Bowie for his entire career.
