George Marion Cabaniss, 67, of Van Buren, Arkansas passed away Friday, March 11, 2016 at his home. He was a current Law Enforcement Instructor for Arkansas Tech University at the Ozark campus and the Career Center and co-host of High Caliber Radio. He was a graduate of Russellville High School and Arkansas Tech University. He was a retired Sergeant from the Van Buren Police Department where he was a past Public Information Officer and the first School Resource Officer for the Van Buren School District.

He inspired and encouraged countless children as a police officer in the school. He was committed to police work and supported his brothers and sisters in blue, being a past President of the Van Buren Fraternal Order of Police, a Van Buren “Police Officer of the Year,” and a certified law enforcement instructor.

He loved his community and spent countless hours volunteering in support of Van Buren. He was a Mason, a charter member and past President of the Kiwanis Club of Van Buren, a past Scout Executive and volunteer for the Boy Scouts of America, Sertoma “Man of the Year,” Kiwanian of the Year, a member of Sons of Confederate Veterans, a softball umpire and coach, and the Public Information Officer for the Crawford County Department of Emergency Management.

He enjoyed being a HAM radio operator and weather spotter. He directed and/or acted in numerous plays at the Fort Smith Little Theatre, including Same Time Next Year, Barefoot in the Park, Cyrano De Bergerac, No Time for Sergeants, The Front Page, and Arsenic and Old Lace, among others.

He had a love of photography. He was an avid supporter of the 2nd Amendment, being a lifetime NRA member, a firearms instructor and partner in Paladin Firearms Training, a gun checker for the Fort Smith Gun and Knife Show, an avid shooter at the local gun range, and a co-host for High Caliber Radio. He served as emcee of the Miss Sebastian County Beauty Pageants for over twenty years. George never met a stranger, always served others and devoted his life to his community.

He was a Christian and a member of Cornerstone Bible Center. He never failed to share his pride and love of his daughter Candice and step-daughters Hannah and Corri, and of course his grandchildren, for whom he was a beloved “paw paw” and “boom pa.” He looked forward to his Thursday nights with his grandson Taryn at Pizza Parlour and Malco for a movie.
I am saddened to see a posting on facebook this evening that George has passed away. I only got to meet him a few times and for that I'm blessed. He was a good man. Rest in peace my brother. May God bless his soul and comfort his family during this difficult time.
I never met George, but e-mails and FB contacts/ messages made it like he was family. Rest in peace brother.
Oh my... what a sad day for his family and those of us who knew him. He was a damn good public servant and proud American... he will definitely be missed by so many.
I've never met the man in person, but we chatted over the years. He'll be missed.
