Timothy Roland Johnson, 38, of Yankton died Saturday (Sept. 1, 2001) at Avera
Sacred Heart Hospital, Yankton, with all of his family and friends by his side, after a
long battle with cancer.
Tim was born on June 20, 1963, at Sioux Falls, S.D., "especially for" Sandra Kay
(Hubner) Johnson Haase and the late Victor Lee Johnson. He grew up in Bensenville,
Ill., and graduated from Fenton High School in Bensenville in 1981.
He had many jobs that he loved, like being a cadet with the police force in
Bensenville. He also was a car detailer at Fensol Tufo Chevy City and worked at
Tomato's Pizza in Bensenville.
He moved to Yankton in 1985, where he worked at Wudel Motor Co. as a car detailer.
He married Tami Diede on Dec. 28, 1985, at Yankton.
He entered the Air Force in January 1986 as a fuel tech specialist and was honorably
discharged in June 1991 after serving in Desert Shield and Desert Storm.
Tim returned to Yankton and worked for Redlinger Plumbing for a short time before
doing what he always wanted to do. In November 1991, he became a member of the
Yankton Police Department, first working in the jail and then becoming a patrol officer.
He worked for three years with Safety Town when it first started. He pioneered the
Cop Card program, donating numerous hours to make the program work for Yankton
area children.
He volunteered his time as an EMT, worked for the Game, Fish and Parks Lake Patrol,
and was a liaison officer at the Yankton Middle School.
On May 5, 2000, Tim received a medical retirement from the Yankton Police
Department.
Tim had many friends of all ages, from young to old, and from all corners of the world.
As most people knew, he was very much into his computer, and loved his children,
wife, family, dog and all his friends from near and far.
The youth of Yankton benefited greatly from the time Tim spent with them. It's
unknown how many misdirected teens he touched and helped through those difficult
years. We will truly never know how many lives he touched.
Tim was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police, Yankton Elks Lodge No. 994,
Dakota Lodge No. 1 of Odd Fellows and Ernest-Bowyer VFW Post No. 791 of Yankton.
Tim is survived by his wife, Tami, of Yankton; two sons, Codi Dale Johnson, age 12,
and Chase Taylor Johnson, age 7, both at home; his mother and stepfather, Sandra
and Dieter Haase of Weston, Florida; stepmother, Nancy Johnson of Yankton;
parents-in-law, Dale and Brigitta Diede of Mission Hill, S.D.; a brother and his wife,
Brett and Debra Johnson of Arlington, Texas; two brothers-in-law and spouses, Nick
and Jill Diede of Hopewell, Va., and Wayne and Marlene Rames of Yankton; his dog,
Scooter, and many other friends and family.
He was preceded in death by his father, Victor Lee Johnson; his maternal
grandparents, Dr. Roland and Lavern Hubner; and paternal grandparents, Timothy
and May Johnson.
A trust fund has been established for the Tim Johnson children at P.O. Box 345,
Yankton, S.D. 57078.
